Biomimetic Crowns

Do you have a damaged tooth that's at risk of fracturing? Biomimetic crowns replicate the biology of the missing tooth structure, replacing only what is necessary. Damaged dentin is rebuilt with a restorative material that mimics the biological properties of natural dentin. Severely compromised teeth are reinforced with Ribbond, which further replicates lost tooth structure. Damaged enamel is replaced with lithium disilicate porcelain, bonded with the same strength that holds natural enamel and dentin together.

What does this mean for you?

  • Maximum tooth preservation
  • Fewer root canals
  • Lower risk of fracture for both your tooth and your crown
  • A beautiful, natural appearance: we use Miyo to custom shade your crown to match your smile
  • Eat and chew right away when you leave our office
  • No temporary crown and no gooey impressions, all in one appointment

Biomimetic Inlays

When the biting ridges of a tooth are strong but a large cavity or an older filling needs to be replaced, a biomimetic inlay may be the ideal solution. Inlays are best used when a filling would cover more than one-third of the biting surface. Compared to a large traditional filling, an inlay is stronger, protects the tooth from fracturing, and can last three to four times longer.

Biomimetic Onlays

Looking for an alternative to a full crown? Biomimetic onlays work much like biomimetic crowns, but they preserve one or more of the biting surfaces that aren't at risk of fracture. An onlay is essentially a partial crown, conserving the cusps you use for chewing. They're often overlooked as a treatment option, but for the right tooth they can mean a more conservative restoration with more of your natural tooth left intact.

Ribbond

Is your tooth severely broken down? Ribbond is made from ultra-high-strength fibers, the same type used in bulletproof vests, and it allows us to save teeth that would otherwise be unsavable. Traditionally, posts have been placed in severely compromised teeth. But posts only help hold a restoration in place, and they're known to cause fractures.

Ribbond works differently. It distributes biting forces throughout the tooth, helping prevent fractures while allowing us to build back missing tooth structure. It also replicates a natural tooth's ability to bend and flex, which means less sensitivity and a stronger, more resilient restoration.

Frequently Asked Questions

In many cases, yes. By preserving healthy tooth structure and sealing exposed dentin right away, biomimetic treatment helps protect the nerve of the tooth and can reduce the need for root canals and future dental work. Your dentist will let you know what's right for your situation.

Traditional crowns often require removing a significant amount of healthy tooth structure. Biomimetic crowns replace only the damaged portions of the tooth with materials that mimic natural dentin and enamel, so more of your natural tooth is preserved.

Many patients are candidates, including those with large cavities, old fillings, cracked teeth, or severely broken-down teeth. Schedule a visit and we'll help you find the most conservative option for your smile.
